I Building and Structures: <br />• All x~an-made buildinos and structures within the lease <br />area have been identified: by CwI. The subsidence study <br />should predict how these structures will be influenced by <br />mining and whether or which mitigation measures should be <br />taken to avoid any damage to them. <br />Surface Water (Springs, Ponds and Surface Streams): <br />The CWI engineering staff performed a detailed <br />inventory of all springs, ponds and surface streams within <br />the proposed lease area. At the same time, monitoring <br />programs have been implemented to monitor the yields of <br />individual springs and the flows of the surface streams. The <br />subsidence study is to evaluate the impacts on water <br />quality and quantity of these individual springs, ponds and <br />surface streams; any possible mitigation measures should be <br />recommended. <br />Ground Water: <br />Using data obtained by CWI and their consultants, any <br />potential aquifers in the proposed lease area should be <br />defined. Tliey will include shallow (colluvial and alluvial) <br />aquifers that apparently feed most springs in the area and <br />• any potential aquifers or water-bearing strata that may <br />exist within the bedrock formation. The effects of <br />subsidence on all these aquifers or water-bearing strata <br />should be predicted. If necessary, mitigating measures to <br />protect the ground water regime would be recommended. <br />1.3 METFIOU OF THE STUDY <br />A CWI map at a scale of 1" = 1,000' was used as a <br />topographic base for the purpose of the subsidence study. <br />'t'his topographic map shows the area of the proposed lease <br />and its immediate vicinity; it is sufficiently accurate for <br />phis study. Aerial photographs of a part of the lease area <br />were also made available by CItiI. <br />The evaluation of geologic, yeoteci~nical and <br />hydrological conditions was a major Dart of the subsidence <br />study. Most data were obtained from the geologic studies <br />performed during the last three years by Dames & Moore <br />(1981, 1982). 'Phree reports by Danes & Moore were made <br />available from which data pertinent to subsidence were <br />evaluated. Danes & '•?pore's reports contain infpr~ation on <br />a>:ploratory drilling perfprmed during the last two years. ~s <br />~J <br />- 3 - <br />
