UNITED STATES
DEPARTMENT OF
AGRICULTURE
"oil
Cor,_ -'vati ,
Service
DATE: June ]5, 1994
~~
60 Hickory
Akron, CO 80720
(303) 345-2006
FROM: Ron Neher, District Conservationist
TO: Bill Paynter, Washington County Attorney
SUBJECT: Reclamation Plan for Nickell Gravel Pit
INTRODUCTION
The following is a reclamation plan for the Nickell Gravel
Pit, located in the northeast quarter of the southeast quarter of
Section 30, Township 5 South, Range 55 West, of the 6th P. M.,
Washington County, Colorado_ This reclamation plan involves an
8.51 acre site in Vega Creek in the southwestern portion of
Washington County. Washington County has a five year lease on
the site for the purpose of mining gravel_ Operations have not
begun as of our field visit on June 1, 1994_
SITE DESCRIPTION
Soils
The 8.51 acre site consists wholly of the Bankard sandy loam
.soil type. This is a deep, somewhat excessively drained soil on
alluvial valley floors and on low stream terraces of intermittent
and perennial streams. Slopes common to this soil type can range
from flat to 2~. The slope found on this site is rather level to
1~_ Included in this soil type are small areas of Paoli sandy
loam. Permeability of Bankard sandy loam i.s rapid with available
water capacity being low. The hazard of soil erosion due t.o wind
is severe. This soil type is classed as a Class VI. A detailed
description of Bankard sandy loam is attached.
Wildlife
Wildlife noted on the site and/or known to inhabit the site
are as follows: badger, deer, antelope, various species of
snakes, lizards, horned lark, larkbunting, kingbird, and hawks_
Other species of wildlife could also inhabit the site.
Plants
The area to be mined has 10~ to 15~ ground cover of
vegetation with an upward trend of grasses becoming more
dominant.
Grasses noted on the site include: western wheatgrass, blue
grams, 6uffalograss, needle and thread, sixweek fescue,
cheatgrass, red threeawn, and foxtail barley.
Forbs noted on the site include: mustard, prickly pear
cactus, spiderwort, morning glary, wavy-leaved thistle, hairy
goldaster, Louisiana sagewort, scarlet globemallow, woolly
Indianwheat, wallflower, aster, and barrel cactus.
Permanent Structures
No permanent man-made structures are noted within 200 feet
of the proposed gravel pit_
