Mayo and Assoslalea, LC
. Recornn:ended Ckanges:
Remove water quality monitoring, except of the required parameters of TDS, EC, pH, and
iron, from the monitoring plan for those wells which have more than 5 years of water quality
data. Remove well SOM-C-72-H from the plan because the bottom of the well has been
mined through.
2.1.3 Rollins Sandstone Wells
Discussion:
The current monitoring plan includes two wells, SOM-128-H and So. W-3. The investigation
offault-related groundwater inflows from the Rollins Sandstone (Mayo and Associates,
• 1998) demonstrates that Rollins Sandstone monitoring wells do not provide predictable
infornration regarding Rollins Sandstone groundwater conditions. Therefore Rollins
Sandstone wells should not be monitored or replaced once [hey become damaged.
The stable isotopic composition of water from well SOM-128-H indicates that the well
contains appreciable evaporative water. The water level hydrograph also exhibits a very
unusual behavior that cannot be attributed to natural causes. The unusual conditions are
likely the result of well casing damage. Therefore the well does not provide useful
information and should be removed from the monitoring program.
C~
Evaluation of [he West Elk Mine Monitoring Plan
29 January 1999
Page 7
