I[ formed in colluvium and residuum <br />derived dominantly from sandstone and shale. Elevation is 7,000 to B,SOU <br />feet. The average annual precipitation Ss 18 to 25 inches, the average <br />annual air teisperature is 37 to 40 degrees F, and Che frost-free season is <br />40 to 65 days. <br />Typically, the surface layer is very dark grayish brown to brown loam <br />about 26 inches thick. The upper par[ of the subsoil is yellowish brown <br />clay loam about 12 inches thick, Tlie lower part to a depth of 60 inches or <br />more is yellowish brown and light yellowish brown silty clay loam. <br />Included in this unit are small areas of Coutls Fine sandy loam, <br />auckskin loam, and Cochetopa loam. <br />Permeability of this Roust soil is very slow. Effective rooting del~tli • <br />is 6U inches or more. Available water capacity is high. Runoff is niudium, <br />and the hazard of water erosion is Nigh. <br />Most areas of this unit are used for livestock grazing and wildlife <br />habitat. A few areas are used for irrigated hay and nonirrigated crops. <br />Ni~eat is [he main nonirrigated crop. <br />The potential plant community on [I~is unit is mainly Letterman <br />needlegrass, Colwobia needlegrass, mountain big sagebrush, and mountain <br />snowberry. Other plants tlta[ characterize this unit are mountain brume, <br />Idaho fescue, slender wheatgrass, low rabbitbrush, and Saskatoon <br />servlceberry.
