These wells are permitted with the State
Engineers Office, permits 234162 to 231466. Ground movement
earlier this spring has bent the casings below the ground
surface. I lowered a weighted line down each of the casings.
The inside of each casing was pinched off at 18 to 26 feet below
ground surface. In addition, water is flowing out of the ground
at this site. Since all five wells are artesian, I suspect that
the water is coming from a break in the casings below ground.
Earlier this summer, we dug around these wells in an attempt to
repair them. The damage was too deep below ground surface to
safely repair them. In order to abandon these wells, we plan to
straighten the bent casings with a backhoe while the excavation
is still open around them. The excavation will then be
backfilled. With a drill rig, we will then force a tre~nmie pipe
down the well casing, and fill the casing with cement. We will
then fracture the PVC well casing at 40 feet deep, below the
bottom of the steel surface casing, to gain communication with
the annulus. we will then pump cement down the hole to ~~eal off
the annulus.
Replacement wells will be drilled next year. Please contact me
at 970-276-5209 if you or any other members of the Division have
any questions.
Seneca Coal Company • P.O.
