• Table S.1 provides new 1961 herbaceous biomass data for the sagebrush mine
area. A total of 27-lmz plots were clipped, generating a mean and standard
deviation of 116.9 g/mz -` 45.3. This mean was higher than that measured on
the reference area (104.8 g/m2 19.6), but the means were not signifi-
cantly differ2nt at the 95% confidence level (see page 5).
Percent herbaceous foliage cover was measured on the sagebrush mine and
reference areas, as shown in Tables S.3 and 5.4. Cover estimates for 1981
were combined with estimates from 1980 for both areas. As shown in the
tables, four additional transects were sampled in the mine area and three
in the reference area. Total vegetation cover was nearly the same in both
areas: 33.3% ± 6.1 in the mine area and 33.9% t 5.6 in the reference area.
Table S.5 lists shrub density data from 1980 and 1981 for the sagebrush
mine and reference areas. Two additional quadrats (nos. 5-6) were counted
in the mine area in 1981 to meet the statistical adequacy requirements.
The mean value of 105.8 t 16.1 stems per 50m= was changed only slightly
• with this additional data.
In the Gambel oak community, additional woody plant density sampling was
conducted on the mine area. as shown in Table 0.5. Additional data was
added for quadrats 5-9. Quadrats 5 and 6 were counted for shrub density in
1980 but were inadvertently left out of the data table in the original
report. Quadrats 7-9 were counted in 1981, with quadrat 9 counted only for
tree density. The combined data, eight quadrats for shrub and seedling
density and seven quadrats for tree density, allow the sample adequacy
requirements_to be met. The mean density of shrubs was 129.9 t 24.2 per 50
m2, while mean tree density was 43.1 t 1.2 per 100 m2.
One additional quadrat (no. 5) was sampled in the chokecherry community
(Table C.5), which allowed the sample adequacy requirement to be met for
the mine area. The mean density of shrubs and seedlings was 147.8 t 20.4
per 5Qn2 quadrat. .

631C4
