WQCD - 2 - October 12, 1999
The Operator does not measure localized precipitation, so the magnitude of the August 11, 1999
significant precipitation event is unknown. However, the operator plans to assure that a similar event
does not compromise the mine water treatment system. A 100-year storm event (2.2 inches) would
add appro~omately 288,000 gallons of sediment laden water to Sump No. 1 assuming 100% run-off
over the 210,000 square foot decline area. Sump No. 1 has a capacity of about 1.73 million gallons.
In order to assure a significant precipitation event does not upset the mine dewatering system, Sump
No. 1 will be maintained normally empty. It will always have a minimum freeboard capacity of
288,000 gallons. The operator has icorporated this plan in its DMG permit.
Sincerely,
S~, P~
Consulting Engineer
Enclosures
DMRCDOH
