42.05 APPLICATION FOR PERMIT FOR SURFACE OR UNDERGROUND MINING ACTIVITIES --
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR OPERATION AND RECLAMATION PLANS.
2.05.6 Mitigation of Surface Coal Mining Operation Impacts. (Cont'd.)
(3) (b) (iv) (Cont'd.)

n
U
reported that silt-charged streams deposited
sediment in mining-induced cracks minimizing
water infiltration into iron ore mines in Ala-
bama.
The significance and material damage to ephem-
eral streams from subsidence-induced cracks
will be minimized by continual stream monitor-
ing, correlation to precipitation events, and
quick detection and repair to stream channels
(refer to Subsidence Repair Handbook, Volume
3). The duration of any impact upon stream
flow would be very short term and CWI believes
temporary and permanent repair could be accom-
plished in several days. Riparian habitat,
aquatic life, and downstream water users would
not be affected. In the unlikely event that
repair is not sufficient to preclude down-
stream water user effects, a water replacement
plan has also been proposed with the change in
Overland Ditch water being diverted down West
Roatcap Creek, no irrigation conveyance system
will be undermined. West Roatcap Creek and
Terror Creek streambeds will not be under-
mined. Also, East Roatcap Creelc and Steven's
Gulch will be protected by BLM stipulated buf-
fer zones and reduced recovery plans are de-
scribed in Subsidence Control Plan, Section
2.05.6.
Because of the interrelationship between co1-
lw ial springs and ponds, the conseouences for
ponds are included in the discussion of
springs.
The probable hydrologic consequences for the
existing Orchard Valley Mine site and permit
area would change little with the construction
of the Orchard Valley West Mine. Calculations
and projections for the probable hydrologic
consequences of construction of the Orchard
Valley West Mine facilities are included in
the Hydro-Geo, Inc. report in Volume 4.
Added I2/Z6 /84
Revised 10/12/86
Revised 10/01/87
134
