while others used the shrink stope procedure.
•
Table 3.1-1 shows the dates of mining, location, seams mined,
surface disturbance, extent of coal removed and the type and
description of mining for both the permit area and adjacent areas.
The land use in all of these areas prior to mining was either
undeveloped land or grazing.
To show the location and extent of possible disturbance caused by
previous mining activity within the permit area, Figure 3.1-3 has
been developed. In addition, those mines which are located within
the coal lease boundary and adjacent areas but outside of the
permit area are also shown on Figure 3.1-3 to indicate the probable
existence of surface disturbance associated with coal mining
activities outside of the permit area.
With respect to surface disturbance by previous mining activity
within the permit area, acreages were determined and recorded on
Table 3.1-1. These acreage values represent the total surface .
disturbance corresponding to each operation and includes such
things as burn areas, subsided areas, facility sites and any
reclaimed areas. The disturbed areas shown on Figure 3.1-3 include
a 200-ft perimeter outside the operating boundaries of each of the
previous mining operations.
Specific disturbance related to all portal areas include coal
spills or residue from stockpiles, debris (timber and metal), old
structures (buildings, tipples, rail) and roads. The pictures in
Exhibits 3.1-1 and 3.1-2 show some of this disturbance. Distur-
bance as a result of coal burns along the outcrop with associated
subsidence where the coal was consumed and also subsidence in areas
of mine portals or ventilation raises is depicted on the maps as
longer surface disturbance areas and in the photos.
On the north side of the hogback near the proposed surface facili-
ties, a tram line was cut up the slope with a lateral road to the •
NCEC - Coal Ridge #1 3-6 ASC/1145/900301
