•
I•
1 sampling indicate lateral variability in the local depositional environment. Based upon the cropline
to recovery line variability, Peabody selected (meeting, G. Wendt and S. Renner, June 22, 1987
and letter G. Wendt to P. O'Connor, July 6, 1987), and CDMG approved three additional sample
locations to accurately delineate areas of acidic and/or sodic overburden and interburden. The
combined Phase I/II sampling intensity for the New Horizon 2 study area is 80 acres/hole.
A lithium-based drill stem joint lubricant was used at all 1987 sample sites. Holes were drilled
primarily with air until circulation was lost. Water injections were occasionally utilized to restore
circulation at Sites 881 E and 886E.
The core drilling and sampling methods were identical to those previously described for Phase I.
Overburden cuttings (chip samples) were collected exclusively with air from the combination
bore/core holes. The vertical sampling increment for cuttings samples was adjusted at each
individual location in response to the encountered geologic strata. Chip samples were collected
from the soil surface to the depth at which cutting circulation was hampered or lost for a particular
hole. Subsequently, once ground water was encountered, core samples were collected. A
geophysical log which included density, resistivity, and natural gamma was also completed foreach
hole. Once all chip samples and cores were drilled, sampled, described, and boxed, they were
shipped by truck to InterMountain Lab in Farmington, New Mexico.
Parameter Selection -Phase I
The Phase I analyses list for New Horizon 2 was developed after an extensive review of recent
literature, the Division's overburden sampling guidelines (CDMG,1982), consultation with Division
personnel, and previous sampling conducted at the New Horizon 1 mine area. The OIU monitoring
plan was submitted to the Division for approval on February 20, 1987 (letter, G. Wendt to
P.O'Connor). A letter of agreement on the proposed OIU baseline study for New Horizon 2 was
received from the Division on April 24, 1987 (letter, P. O'Connor to J.Lunan).
The following chemical and physical parameters were proposed to be determined for the Phase
I evaluation of OIU material in the New Horizon 2 study area:
REVISED August 2006
2.04.6-17
