WINTER RANCH GRAVEL PIT
SECTION III - Vegetative Inventory
Loamy Plains (L.P.) - Moderately well developed soils of this site take
in eummor moisture reasonably well. The dominant grasses, Blue grema and
galleta, respond quickly and may produce in a 6avorable year up to 1000
pounds forage per year.. Western wheat, Sideoats grema, Four wing salt bush,
Indian rice grass and Winter fat make up the remainder of the plant community.
Production is almost entirely dependent on summer moisture. Stands of Cholla
cactus are present in some areas.
Shaly Plains (S.P.) - Thin soils with very slow water intake rates work
against production of large amounts of forage. Soils also contain salts,
which further limits the kinds and amounts of plants. Alkali sacaton, Blue
grema, Wsatern wheat grass and Gallata are the most common grasses. Side
Oats grams and Indian grass also grow here. Production is limited to only
600-700pounda per acrd even in favorable years.
Gravel Breaks (G.B.) - Tha usually thin gravelly soils on steep elopes
can take water into them at a rapid rate, but they are poor at moisture
storage. Thsy dry out in a short time. Forage production le mostly from
Blue grema, Needle and thread, Side oats grema, Indian rice press and
Four wing salt bush. Cholla, Snakeweed, three awn, and Rabbit brush do
not form much of the cover. Total annual yields run about 1200 pounds per
acre in favorabls years.
Water Resaixrces
Mining is not expected to affect the surface water.
The depth to underground is unknown.

~]
