Box 511
Ia Junta, CO 81050
Dear Don:
Recently you and I reviewed the queetiona raised by Mark S. Loye,
Reclamation Specialist, from Colorado Mined Iaad Beclamation, regarding
your permit application for Hancock Gravel Pit, identified by Mined Iand
Reclamation file ~/$1-2?9. Itees we discussed are:
1). Exhibit E: Reclamation Plan. Mr. Loye recommends eared dropaeed and
yellow sweetclover be added to seed miz on reclamation sites.
2). Edhibit I: Soils. Mr. Loye wants assurance that voila acquired from
off-the-site locations are comparable to on-the-site topsoils in
teature and adapted to planned fertilizer recommendations.
3). Ezhibit H: Wildlife. Mr. Loye wants recommended brush species to be
seeded in depression areas for wildlife enhancement. .
After we reviewed the foregoing items you asked me to consider and research
these queetiona and give you a written reply ae soon as possible. My
recommendations follow:
1). Exhibit E: Reclamation Flan. I consider eaad dropaeed ae optional in
the seed miz because this grass is a natural i~ader and will usually
reseed naturally in disturbed areas where seeding ie not effective.
IInder natural conditions sand dropaeed will comprise about 596 by weight
of the total vegetative cover on this site. I will not recommend yellow
sweetclover ae a part of your seed miz. Yellow eweetclover is usually
short lived, is competitive xith grasses for moisture and space and does
- not contribute significantly.-to seed_li_ng-success or longevity of the
grssa stand. - _ -
O Tne $oi Coneervelan Service
lJ is en •pencY of Ins SCS-AS-1
Depe/tment of Apritultwe tD 79
