The native vegetation is mainly grasses.
Elevation is 5,000 to 6,000 feet. The average annual precipitation is
10 to 13 inches, the average annual air temperature is 49 to 53
degrees F, and the average frost-free period is 125 to 165 days.
This unit is about 50 percent Kim soil and about 35 percent
Cascajo soil.. The Kim sot; is on foot slopes and in drainageways, and
the Cascajo soil is on short, steeper breaks.
Included in this unit is about 5 percent shallow, clayey Midway
very gravelly clay loam on breaks. Also included is about 10 percent
shallow Shingle very stony fine sandy loam on breaks.
In the east one-half of Sec. 30, T. 18 S., R. 69 W. This unit
includes small areas of soil with a high content of gypsum crystals
below depths of 12 to 24 inches. This soil is similar to Kim soil,
but the surface of the soil is covered with rock fragments. Depth to
weathered, gypsiferous shales is 35 to 60 inches. Many of these
gravelly or stony areas are covered by pinyon and juniper.
The Kim soil is deep and well drained. It formed in alluvium.
Slope is 2 to 10 percent. Typically, the surface layer is pale brown
loam about 4 inches thick, The substratum to a depth of 60 inches or
more is loam. The soil is moderately alkaline.
Permeability of~ the Kim soil is moderate. Available water
capacity is high. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more.
Runoff is slow to rapid, and the hazard of water erosion is slight to
high.
The Cascajo soil is deep and excessively drained. It formed in
gravelly and sandy alluvium. Slope is 10 to 15 percent. Typically,
the surface layer is very dark grayish brown very gravelly sandy loam
about 6 inches thick. The upper 15 inches of the substratum is
extremely cobbly sandy loam. The lower part to a depth of 60 inches
is extremely cobbly sand. The soil is moderately alkaline. A layer
with a high content of accumulated calcium carbonate is at depth of 6
to 21 inches.
Permeability of the Cascajo soil is moderately rapid to rapid.
Available water capacity is very low. Effective rooting depth is 60
inches or more. Runoff is medium to rapid, and the hazard of water
erosion is moderate to high.
This unit is used for rangeland.
The potential plant community on the Kim soil is mainly blue
grama, western •.+heatgro~:;, sideoats grama, and sand dropseed. The
average annual production of air-dry vegetation is about 300 pounds
per acre. If the condition of the range d~i.eriorates, Russian
thistle, ring mutely, red `.hreeawn, and pricklypear increase. Range
seeding is suitable if the range is in poor condition.
The potential plant community on the Cascajo soil is mainly
sideoats grama, blue grama, little bluestem, needleandthread, and
Indian ricegrass. The average annual production of air-dry vegetation
is about 750 pounds per acre. If the condition of the range
deteriorates, red threeawn, blue grama, annual fortis, and pricklypear
increase. The main limitations for seeding are the content of gravel
and cobble in the surface of the soils.
