•
The recommended grass mixture is:
Total PLS Ibs/
PLS Seeding Rate/ Species Needed
Variety Species Acre drilled broadcasted
Saltalk alkali sacaton $.6 x 1$ acres = 6.$ 12,$
or Salado
Arriba western wheatgrass 6.4 x 10 acres = 64.$ 128,$
Common alsike clover $.$ x 1$ acres = 8.$ 16.$
Planting depths should be 1/4-3/4 inches and the seeded area should be
mulched with a clean weed-free straw at 4,$$0 Ibs per acre and crimped
into the soil 4 inches with a disc plow (set discs forward). This will
provide protection for the grass seedlings, supply additional organic
matter to the soil, and protect the soil from wind erosion. Fertilizer
should be applied prior to seeding, during seeding, or immediately
following seeding as applicable to the kind of fertilizer and type of
equipment used at a rate of 4$Ibs/acre nitrogen, 4$ Ibs/acre
phosphorus, and 4$ Ibs/acre sulphur. The sulphur will help to correct
the pH of the soil and make other micronutrients available to the
seedlings. For more site-specific recommendations, fertilize according
to a soil test analysis. Weed control is also important during stand
establishment. Mowing weeds during the growing season is recommended
until grasses are established. If in two years, the grass seeding is
not successful the area should be replanted.
