]221 Fremont County Rd 3
Canon City, CO 81212
August 21, 1997
«<rii~l~riill«iii
999
RECEIVED
STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
ATTN:LARRY OEHLER
1313 SHERMAN STREET ROOM 215
DENVER CO 80203
RE: Parkdale Project
112 Permit Application
File No. M-97-054
AUG 2 5 1997
Division of Mmerais x Geology
Dear Mr. Oehler,
The Fremont County Commissioners recently granted a Conditional Use Permit #97-5 to
Agile Stone Systems, Inc. for a gravel and stone quarry. There are several areas of concern we
believe the commissioners did not investigate and address thoroughly.
We are sure you are aware of the controversy about this mine.. Our home is within two
miles of the proposed quarry. We are compelled to make known our objections to this operation.
The areas your agency governs are as follows:
• Agile Stone Systems, Inc. estimates they will use an estimated thirty thousand gallons
(30,000) of water per day to control dust. The Conditional Use Permit was granted before they
~!!' f -su~cisru~arater rights for their pro osed operation. If the water rights are not acquired, there
',~~; ZL ~"~ ~" is nothing in the permit to preven dry mi ' g •The West Fremont County Citizens held a
~. ,"r'%~ meeting August 5, 1997 at Cotopax o discuss their concern about water. This meeting
CI' ~ was chaired by County Commissioner Keith McNew. One of the suggested proposals was
to meter our wells on private property. If we are to be limited on our water usage, how
can we afford to let an operation that will use 30,000 gallons a day operate in this county?
• The permit does not have explicit plans for blasting. How will the blasting effect
the fault line that runs under the entire proposed area to be mined?
• Our final and most important concem is the destutcuion of the ogntain as a
~/ result of bench cut or hill cut minin~,~'he mine site is visible along Highway 50 and across the
U,f ~^' Arkansas River Valley.'Plte destrucTiori wi~l result in a scar along a
Nif'~ well traveled scenic route. The mountain can not be reclaimed and will remain an ugly sight
~I ~ ~ forever.
If a public hearing has been scheduled we would like to know the particulars. Please keep
us informed about anything related to the Agile Stone Systems, Inc.
Sincerely,
~°~ ~~.
Galen W. and Betty Y. Ashton
