Animals <br />1. Terrestrial Wildlife <br />All wildlife species that occur or are expected to occur <br />on the lease sites are listed in Appendix D of the Nor=h- <br />j west Colorado Coal Regional Environmental Statement <br />1976 (;:?dCCRES). <br />Big Came <br />Only two of the ten species classified as big game by <br />the Colorado Division of 'dildlife (DOI,') are located o. <br />the tracts in substantial numbers. :fule deer (Odocoi=eus <br />hemionus) and elk (Cervus elanhiis) can be found on <br />applications C-26644 and C-29613 throughout the year. <br />Deer occur year round on C-22676 while elk are only <br />occasional visitors. Population densities depend mainly <br />on season and available food and cover. <br />Cougar (Fells concolor) and black bear (Ursus americanus) <br />have been sighted. Both species are solitary, wide- <br />ranging animals, thus, concentrations of individuals <br />would not be expected. The Colorado DO[1 has estimated <br />one bear per S square miles in this area.
