Fish Creek Soil Investigation
percent but may range from 0 to I S percent above the 40 inch depth. Some pedons have a very
gravelly or cobbly loamy sand substratum below 40 inches. These soils typically aze calcareous
throughout the major part of the profile but noncalcareous layers do occur. Reaction is mildly or
moderately alkaline, Electrical conductivity is less than 2 mmhos throughout.
The A horizon has value of 3 through 5 dry, 2 or 3 moist and chroma of 1 through 3. Mottles in
the lower part are common.
The C horizon has hue of 2.SY or lOYR, value of 5 through 7 dry, 4 through 6 moist and chroma
of 1 through 3. Mottles occur in most pedons and darker layers are also common.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Adderton and Silas series. Silas soils are moderately
well drained and does not have a water table within 60 inches. Adderton soils are well drained.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Menbar soils are on floodplains and alluvial fans. Slopes aze 0 to 3
percent. Elevation is 7,000 to 9,000 feet. The mean annual precipitation is 12 to 16 inches. The
mean annual air temperature is 35 to 43 degrees F. The frost-free season is 50 to 80 days but
frost may occur at any time in some locates. These soils are occasionally to rarely flooded.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These aze the Henrvsfork and Tucson soils.
Henrysfork soils have a carbonatic mineralogy. Tucson soils have asandy-skeletal substratum at
20 to 40 inches.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABII.TTY: Somewhat poorly drained, slow runoff; moderate to
moderately slow permeability. A seasonal water table is at 3 to 5 feet.
USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used as rangeland and also irrigated hayland and
pasture. Native vegetation is sedges, grasses such as basin wildrye, tufted hairgrass and western
wheatgrass, cinquefoil, willow, iris, and narrowleaf cottonwood.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southwestern Wyoming and northeastern Utah.
