42.04 APPLICATION FOR PERMIT FOR SIIRFACE OR UNDERGROUND MINING ACTIVITIES --
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR INFORMATION ON ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES,
r
2,04,11 Fish and Wildlife Resources Information, (Cont'd,)
(1) (Cont'd.)
500 feet or so of the stream with the exception of a few small
pools and a trickle in the branch west of the site and with
[he exception of periods of heavy storms.
Where water exists part of the year, the stream is small
(about 4-6 foot channel width and 1-2 foot wetted width),
shallow (g,enerally less than three inches), and with either a
coarse gravel or muddy bottom.
As discussed in the Hydrology Description (Section 2.04.7(2)-
(a) and (b)), Coal Gulch is a small, ephemeral stream located
east of Steven's Gulch (see Map 4-lA) and drains approximately
3.3 square miles. The Coal Gulch Drainage is characterized by
steep hillsides in the upland and flat to rolling terrain in
the lower areas. Elevations range from 6,000 to 8,700 tt.
Peak stream flow occurs during spring run-off and heavy precip-
itation events. The scream is usually dry from July to the
following spring, except during heavy precipitation events.
The flows of Coal Gulch are intercepted by the Fire Mountain
• Canal and are not tributary to the North Fork of the Gunnison
River. As a result of its ephemeral nature and the intercep-
tion of flows by the Canal, CWI believes that little or no
aquatic life exists in Coal Gulch,
Terror Creek is a perennial stream tributary to the North Fork
of the Gunnison River and is located east of Coal Gulch. The
streambed itself lies east of the permit area boundary, but a
portion (less than 8%) of the 29 square mile drainage is with-
in the permit area, The topography of Terror Creels is charac-
terized by steep to vertical canyon walls and nearly straight
stream paths. Peak streamflows occur during spring run-off
and following heavy rainfall. Much of the flow in Serror
Creek is contributed by diversions from Overland and Terror
Reservoirs from May to October.
East Roatcap Creek is an ephemeral stream located west of
Steven's Gulch and drains approximately 3,6 square miles.
Run-off from the northwest portion of the drainage is inter-
cepted by [he Overland Ditch. The remainder of flows from the
East Roatcap Creek Drainage are tributary to the North Fork of
the Gunnison River, The overall gradient of East Roatcap
Creek is 12% and is most steep upstream of the confluence of
Added 12(26/84
Revised 12/26/84
Revised 10/12/86
Revised 10/01/87
78
