52,04 APPLICATION FOR PERMIT FOR SURFACE OR UNDERGROIIND MINING ACTIVITIES --
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR INFORMATION ON ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES,
f ~.
2.04.11 Fish and Aildlife Resources Information.
(1) CWI has had extensive fish and wildlife resource data collect-
ed in the permit area and adjacent areas. Studies were per-
formed during 1977 and 1978, A copy of these field surveys
and the methodologies they employed can be found in the Fish
and Wildlife Appendices, Volume 9A,
Additional research performed in 1981 by the University of
Colorado (refer to Latalog Run Appendix, Volume 9A) inventor-
ies wildlife species in the North Fork area. CWI engineering
staff periodically investigates the wildlife patterns and co-
operates with the Colorado Division of Wildlife with gathering
of statistics.
Fish and aquatic biology information were gathered by Dr.
Robert C. Ericson, a consulting aquatic ecologist associated
with Thorne Ecological Institute. Wildlife studies were per-
formed by Professor Gene Decker of Colorado State University,
also associated with Thorne Ecological Institute.
Aquatic Habitats
Temporary or permanent aquatic habitats in the vicinity of the
• Orchard Valley Dtine consist of the North Fork of the Gunnison
River, Steven's Gulch, East Roatcap Creek, West Roatcap Creek,
Terror Creek, and a few small ponds and irrigation ditches
Farmers Ditch, Paonia Ditch, and Fire Mountain Canal).
Studies of the aquatic biology of Steven's Gulch and the North
Fork of the Gunnison River, including inventories of macroben-
thic organisms and fisheries populations, were conducted dur-
ing 1977 and 1978 by Thorne Ecological Institute. Being trib-
utary to the North Fork of the Gunnison River and similar in
character to Steven's Gulch, C41I projects that the aquatic bi-
ology of Eas[ Roatcap Creek and West Roatcap Creek would be
similar to that of Steven's Gulch. As Terror Creels is peren-
nial and is also tributary to the North Fork of the Gunnison
River, CWI believes that the aquatic biology of Terror Creek
would be similar to that of the A'orth Fork.
Aquatic habitats may be considered according to: a) physical
location and structure; and b) water quality. Both influence
the community composition, productivity and uniqueness of the
aquatic system. Water quality factors that influence aauatic
life are described in the following section.
Revised 12(26/84
Revised 10/01/87
76
