52.04 APPLICATION FOR PERMIT FOR SURFACE OR UNDERGROUND MINING ACTIVITIES --
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR INFORMATION ON ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES.
• 2.04.10 Vegetation Information.
(1) Plant community types affected by surface operations and fa-
cilities were originally delineated in CWI's 1977 application,
Map 9A-1 in Volume 9A shows the original plant community de-
lineations as well as information prepared in 1984 on the re-
mainder of the permit area. Refer to to the Vegetation Ap-
pendix in Volume 9A for a description of the community types.
A detailed vegetation inventory and mapping in the area of the
Orchard Valley West Mine was completed by Harner & Associates,
Inc. during July, 1986. Refer to the Vegetation Map with this
report in the Vegetation Appendix in VolLane 9A for further in-
formation.
(2) Reference area locations have been previously approved and are
shown on Map 9A-1.
(3) See Map 4A-1 showing vegetation for the entire permit area and
adjacent lands. In the case of underground mining, only the
area to be affected by surface operations or facilities is re-
quired. For a complete evaluation of resources, the entire
permit area is shown.
• (4) Baseline vegetation data for the Orchard Valley Mine were ini-
tially obtained by Thorne Ecological Institute in 1977 during
the construction of existing mine surface facilities. This
information provided a brief qualitative description of the
vegetation types within the disturbed area and met existing
baseline requirements.
Colorado Westmoreland Inc. retained Harner-Glhite Ecological
Consultants of Littleton, Colorado, to obtain additional vege-
tation information during 1981. This study describes the ma-
jor plant community types within the original permit area. In
addition, a comprehensive species list was generated from this
inventory.
Reference areas were also established for the vegetation com-
munities that were disturbed by the construction of mine fa-
cilities.
In 1982, Harner-White conducted additional vegetation inven-
tories of herbaceous reference areas so that a reclamation
success standard could be established. Reclamation seed mixes
were also developed from this information.
Revised 08/01/84
• Revised 10/12/86
Revised 10/01/87
70
