side of most homes in Colorado Springs.
Major temperature inversions over Colorado Springs may
influence this site somewhat more than they do the Queen's Canyon
Quarry. The generally northern winds during the times of severe inversions
would often push the inversions against Pikes Peak and the surrounding
hillsides. This could easily influence the quarry site thereby further
modifying the winter climate to some degree.
The general climatic pattern at the site probably parallels
very closely that of the city insofar as dry and wet years are concerned.
Prior to engaging in revegetation of the site the climatic record should
be carefully examined to determine the probable precipitation patterns
to be experienced during the first two to four years of the revegetation
work.
• In summary, no site specific climatic data for this site is
available, but Colorado Springs data was collected near enough to be
useful for interpretive purposes. Temperatures are generally mild,
but probably have a relatively high diurnal variation due to topographic
influences. Precipitation is usually favorable and the basin-like
structure coupled with shading will help to make the moisture more
efficiently utilized. Summer thunderstorms, occasionally severe, are
common and tend to detract to some degree from the expected favorable
precipitation regime causing short periods of probable moisture stress
in all but the most drought resistant species. Wind generally will not
be a problem in reclamation except on the higher reaches of the quarry.
Prior to any planting beyond the first five years of this
permit a careful examination of the climatic record should be done to
.• determine the probable climatic patterns over the first few years of a
revegetation program. It will help in implementing the program to be
S-K-5
