SHELTON, Director
Richar0 D. Lamm
Governor
DATE: April 30, 1986
T0: Peter O'Connor
FROM: Steve Renner
RE: CHIMNEY ROCK COAL FIRST QUARTER HYDROLOGIC MONITORING
Nothing in the first quarter Hydrologic Monitoring Data appears to differ
significantly from expected seasonal fluctuations.
My concerns relate to Chimney Rock's interpretation of the AHR Review, which
is briefly summarized on page 1 of the April 21, 1986 submittal.
Well A-1 is to be sampled for the water quality parameters listed in
the permit revision No. 1 document. Water levels will also be taken as
per the approved permit.
Well W-7, a domestic well about one mile upstream of the mine, will be
reincorporated into the monitoring program. This well will be
monitored for depth and quality as per the approved permit document.
Well W-1 will no longer be sampled for water quality. Depth to water
will still be monitored on the time schedule outlined in the approved
permit document.
As we have discussed, surface sites S-1, S-2, and S-3 have been destroyed by
the high flow of Stollsteimer Creek this spring. It is my opinion that these
gage stations should be reestablished with a staff gage and crest stage gage.
Reestablishing these sites should not begin until perhaps early June. At that
time, the creek will have dropped to a wadeable level, and the stream channel
will be stable. Establishing gage sites during lower flows will help ensure
accurate measurement of discharge during periods of low flow, which is when
mining impacts would be most quantifiable.
If I may be of further help, please contact me.
cc: Mike Savage
/dlm
9755E
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
