1 <br /> <br />1 <br />r <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />EXHIBIT K - CLIMATE <br />5~ <br />This exhibit provides a description of the significant factors <br />affecting climate, seasonal precipitation, and seasonal <br />temperature ranges. <br />PRECIPITATION <br />Precipitation patterns are directly related to local topography. <br />In general, winter precipitation falls as snow over large areas <br />at a time, whereas summer precipitation is most likely to fall <br />as scattered local showers or thunderstorms. At all times of <br />the year participation is normally heaviest over and near <br />mountain ranges. <br />Mean monthly precipitation at Grand Lake is graphed on Plate <br />K-1. Based on 12 years of data prior to and including 1960, <br />the mean annual precipitation at Grand Lake is 14.15 inches. <br />July, August and December have the highest mean monthly totals <br />' with 1.5, 1.70, and 1.45 inches respectively. February and <br />October have the lowest mean totals, 0.80 and 0.75 inches <br />respectively. Table K-1 presents the mean number of days per <br />' month with precipitation totalling one-tenth of an inch or <br />more and .50 inches or more, as well as the number of years of <br />record upon which the data are based. <br />' Snowfall data from thirty years of records taken from a location <br />one mile west-northwest of Grand Lake are presented in Table <br />K-2. It is possible that snowfall at this location is generally <br />' somewhat heavier than in the Windy Gap project area in that the <br />former location is near the mountains and at a higher elevation. <br />Nevertheless, the general snowfall patterns of the locations <br />are similar and the heaviest average monthly snowfall at either <br />location can be expected to be in January, followed in order by <br />December, February, and March. <br />I <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />TEMPERATURE <br />Temperature data are presented in Figure K-2. Based on twelve <br />years of record collected prior to and including 1960, the <br />mean annual temp~arature at Grand Lake was 36°F., with extremes <br />\ of 88°F. and -41 F. Mean monthly temperature ranges from 14.3°F. <br />in January to 56°F. in July. Freezing temperatures can occur <br />during any month of the year. <br /> <br />
