1
Species for use in topsoil and overburden stabilization were
' selected by virtue of their early vigor and, in the case of
Tegmar Intermediate Wheatgrass and Manchar Smooth Brome, their
strong rhizomatous habit. Timothy, although not rhizomatous,
is very vigorous and will contribute to soil holding. Barley
' will provide the very earliest soil holding and cover.
Following cessation of mining and final grading (including
' redistribution of overburden), reserved topsoil will be respread
at depths from 9 to 15 inches.
' FINAL GRADING
Following cessation of mining, any working face left at the
' time of cessation of mining will be reduced to a slope of
3(h):1(v) or less. During periods of low activity in the
mining period, the working face slope will be reduced to avoid
' safety hazards.
As part of regrading, overburden from the overburden stockpile
t will be returned to the mined area at depths ranging from one
to five feet. Areas of redistributed overburden will be no
steeper than 5(h):1(v), except at the working face.
' SEEDBED PREPARATION
' Following regrading and topsoil respreading, if drill seeding
is to be used, the seedbed will be firmed and smoothed as
necessary. If broadcast seeding is used, seed will be broadcast
immediately after topsoiling because the freshly turned soil is
' more receptive to broadcast seed than under any other condition.
In the topsoil storage area, after topsoil respreading, the
surface will be chiseled, harrowed, and/or firmed to produce
' suitable seedbed conditions.
SEED MIX
Following topsoil replacement, the disturbed sites including
the topsoil storage area will be seeded with the seed mix
' listed in Table E-2. This seed mix was designed to return as
much of the native diversity as practical within the confines
of commercial availability of seed. The selected species are
' adapted to the relatively dry conditions at the borrow area C
site. Three of the currently important shrubs on the site
(Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana, Vasey Big Sagebrush;
' Chrysothamnus nauseosus, Rubber Rabbitbrush; and Chrysothamnus
viscidiflorus, Low Rabbitbrush) are not included in t e seed
mix although their return is desirable. It is felt that these
' E-3
