If they conduct the drilling between Oct 1 and March 30,
there should be no adverse impacts to burrowing owls. Some individuals may still be present in the area, but the
young should have fledged by now and can avoid any temporary disturbance.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Murari and Western Fuels for their concern and
cooperation in this matter. The Division of Wildlife appreciates their efforts to lessen any adverse impacts on the
wildlife resource.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at the number listed below.
Jim
Jim Gamer
Area 18 Wildlife Conservation Biologist
Colorado Division of Wildlife
2300 South Townsend Ave
Montrose, CO 81401
(970) 252 -6016
- - - -- Original Message - -- -
From: Murari Shrestha [mailto:Murari @westernfuels.org]
Sent: Tuesday, September 25, 2007 1:25 PM
To: Garner, Jim
Cc: Hernandez, Daniel
Subject: Waiver for Burrowing Owl Survey
Hello Jim!
We are planning to start drilling in the Third Park area beginning on Monday (10/1). The first phase of the
drilling is expected to take about 10 days. After this it is likely that we move to the 2nd Park/Cyprus Block.
We are seeking a permit to explore this area from Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
( CDRMS). Recently, you and I discussed the issue of conducting a survey for the Western Burrowing Owl
in this area. I understand we will not be required to survey if the drilling activity takes place between
November 1 and March 14. However, you indicated that a waiver could be granted after a visit to the site
by you and other CDOW personnel if we needed to drill in October since the Western Burrowing Owl tend
to migrate out of the area starting in October_ Could you please send an e-mail to Dan Hernandez of
CDRMS confirming this conversation? Dan's e-mail address is daniel.hernandez(cDstate.co.us Thank
you.
Murari P.
