Material samples obtained during the subsurface investigation were tested in the laboratory to
• provide data on the classification and engineering characteristics of the subgrade soils. The results of
the field and laboratory investigations aze presented herein.
This report has been prepared to summarize the data obtained and to present our conclusions and
recommendations, based on the existing conditions encountered and the assumed traffic loadings. A
discussion of geo[echnical engineering considerations related to construction of the haul road are also
included.
We understand that this road is approximately 1500 Feet in length and the portion of the Haul road
which was evaluated extends from [he Batch Load Out Facility (presently under construction) to the
east to the Waste Coal Pile along the south side of the Overland Belt. The haul road is subjected [o
heave haul trucks and scrapers, as well as pickup truck traffic.
Subsurface Conditions: The field investigation for this project was conducted on September 13, 1995.
Two (2) test holes were advanced at the site to explore the subgrade conditions and to obtain samples
for laboratory testing. The test holes were drilled with atrack-mounted drill rig utilizing 6-inch
diameter augers. The test holes were advanced to depths ranging from 3 to 4 feet. The test holes were
logged by a representative of Northwest Colorado Consultants, lnc. Graphic logs of the test holes are
no[ drawn; however, a discussion of the subgrade soil types encountered in the test holes are presented
later in this report.
• Samples obtained from the test holes were examined and classified in the laboratory by the project
engineer. Laboratory testing included standard property tests, such as natural moisture contents, dry
(970) 879.7888 • Fax (970) 879-7891
29585 U.S. 40 West, Box 775226 • Steamboat Springs, CO 80477 '~ a~
