• REVIEW QUESTION
4.15.7 Determining Revegetation Success: General
equirements an tan ar s
4.15.7
(3) In the section on random sample selection the applicant must dis-
cuss how a random direction was selected for the frisbee throw sampling.
RESPONSE
The frisbee was used for sample site selection in small areas of
homogeneous vegetation. It was primarily used in the wet meadow
community. On entering each community, the frisbee was randomly
tossed within an area that would insure its landing within the
suitable vegetation area. The frisbee was thrown as hard as
possible, within limits that caused it to remain within the
homogeneous area. Near the first sample point, the frisbee was
• thrown again while the investigator was spinning around, re-
f easi ng i t at no particular- angl a or di recta on, other than to
not exceed the bounds of the homogeneous sampling area. This -
procedure was repeated several times. Portions of the community
which had not been covered by this time were specifically
entered and a random throw made while spinning around, of such a
distance to keep the frisbee within the homogeneous sampling
area. The procedures of throwing from point to point, or
walking to a new point and making a throw, were repeated unti l
the desired number of samples were obtained. No attempt was
made to select one particular spot over another, and throws were
generally fifty feet or more, to minimize any possible investi-
• I Bator control over the precise sampling location. Frisbee
throwing is an accepted means of random sample location in vege-
tation sampling area. The procedures of throwing from point to
