C
is relatively sRali and probably could not support over one pair of water-
fowl in a given year. ::o waterfowl nests or broods were located on the
study area in 1979, Due to the lack of waterfowl and riparian areas, the
study area cannot be considered good waterfowl habitat. The largest perennial
water bony harboring waterfowl populations near the study area is the Miguel
River, approxuciately six miles southwe=>t of the \'ucla mine.
BIG GAhE STUDIES
Mule deer is the only resident big game species on the study area. E]k were sighted in apinyon-juniper area approximately two miles
north and east of the study area during the winter, 1978 (personal ooarmulication,
May 1979, Mr. Fritz Nyland, 1oca1 resident; personal m;mav~ication, May 19T9,
Mrs. Francis E'ort, local resident) . Rv.,+eves, winter habitat for el)c moving
•~ dawn from the mountains to the north and east is considered marginal by the
DOW (personal c~nmutication, :;arch 1980, Rich Sherman, DOW).
Mule deer are year-round residents of habitats in the vicinity of t3liCla mine
atxl are mcmron in pinyon-juniper woodlands east of the study area. Mule deer
were heavily concentrated in tyese woodlands during the winter, 1980. ~.l.y
three mule deer were observed in the vicinity of the study area during 1979-
1980 investigations 4'1ap 11-2, Appendix A) although tracks and droppings were
frequently encountered on the eastern boundary of the permu.t azea. Popula-
tion esturates are not available, i~»wwever (personal oaimnuLication, :'arch 1980,
Rich Sherrcan, DCW). ~C-.cod mule deer-habitat does not exist on the study area:
the habitat immdiately surrounding the study area is considered only
marginal.
MAFPtALTJLV PREDA1bRS
The scent-station visitation te,_;~nique (I,inhart and Wx7wlton 1973) was used
to determine the presence and mlative abundance of mat:malian predators
-SO-
•
JU11l1198~
(Revised August 2006) Attachment 2.04.10-10-47
