n
U
yon-juniper waod_land on the eastenz portion of t_,e ntine boundary. This irrivid-
ual was observed foraging for insects in a roc)cy outcropping. One yellow
warbler was observed in the grove o£ trees northeast o€ tt~e farmhouse on
the study area. Yellow warblers are owmnnly found in thickets and orchards.
Raptorial sirds. The stay area is used as hunting habitat for at least five
different raptor species: red-tailed hawK, AneriCan kestrel, Cooper's hawk,
rough-legged hawk, and marsh hawk. irxation of all sight; ~~s of these species
are provided in Appendix A, Map 11-2. The occurrence aryl seasonal use of the
study area and potential important habitat (i.e., nesting) is discussed belva
for each of the raptor species observed on the study area.
Red-tailed haw;c. The Nuc1a study area occurs on tre border betaaeen the surmax
and winter range of the red-tailed hav~.3c (Robbins et al. 1966). Hpwever, this
raptor was not observed during winter field studies at Nucla. Four observa-
tions did occur near the study area during vhe period May -September, 1979.
Observations included one pair of reel-tailed hawks hunting the spoil piles
•i approxirately § mile south of the mine head~,~rters and one red-tailed hawk
appmximstely one mile west of the study area in September, 1979.
REd-tailed hawk nests x~re rnt located on the Nucla study area during 1979.
FSOkEVPY, one female red-tailed hawk was observed on a stick nest in a ootton-
wood grove located appzoxinately one mile east of the mine headquarters in May,
1979. The number of young in the nest was not determined.
Red-tailed hawks oamionly nest on sheer cliff faces or in trees located in
agricultural areas. Potential nesting habitat in the Nucla study azea exists
in the trees along tha riparian habitat and in the wind break northeast of
the farmhouse. Potential nesting opportunities are greater off~itei sand-
stone cliffs and outcroppings and pinyon-juniper woodlands occur east of the
mine permit boundry.
Cooper's hawk. The Nucla study area occurs within year-round range of the
Cooper's hawk. Only one Cooper's hawk was observed near the study area;
this individual was sighted approxinataly ~, mile south of the mine headquarters
-37-
r~
L_J
JL'M 3 3 1980
(Revised August 2006) Attachment 2.04.10-10-44
