observed in this drainage during the thirteen years that BMRI has been monitoring flows
at the mine site.
Drainages intersecting the tailing disposal facility have been diverted via a system of
ditches in order to prevent possible commingling with process water. These ditches are
provided with energy dissipation structures at regulaz intervals to minimize or maintain
erosion and sediment load.
4.0 STORMWATER RUNOFF CLASSIFICATION
Runoff from various portions of the mine site is segregated into disturbed or undisturbed
areas through the use of berms, diversion ditches (earth-lined), and diversion channels
(rock protected).
Disturbed areas are those that generate runoff considered to be Stormwater (SW) flows,
which is subject to the Stormwater Program but is not subject to Effluent Limitation
Guidelines (ELG) regulated under 40 CFR Part 440 as Process Water (PW) or Mine
Drainage (MD). Undisturbed areas are comprised of Unclassified (UC) flows, which are
not subject to the Stormwater Program or 40 CFR Part 440 ELG. Segregation of UC and
SW flows from MD and PW flows will ensure that each type of runoff will be handled
appropriately. This is an important distinction since runoff subject to 40 CFR Part 440
ELG may require a greater degree of attention. This approach also limits the quantity of
water that is subject to ELG. This, in turn, maximizes the return flow to the stream
system.
Runoff from undisturbed azeas that is designated UC flow will be diverted around
process areas via diversion ditches and berms. Sediment due to erosion of the ditches
will be removed by utilizing one or more of the BMPs described in this report, and shown
in Figures 2 through 5. Runoff from areas designated MD (see Facilities Summary,
Table 1) will be collected for treatment utilizing recognized BMPs and will be released in
accordance with the Stormwater Regulations and conditions associated with DMG permit
requirements.
