Lung
Hesperus, CO 81326 Division Director
Re: National King Coal LLC, Quarterly Pond and Waste Pi]e Inspection, Permit No. C-81-035
Dear Mr. Bird:
The Division has received King Coal Mine's 3rd quarter 1999 through l" quarter 2001 Sediment Pond and
Waste Pile Inspection reports and completed the review for each. For the period covered, the East and West
ponds have been cleaned but some down cutting is being observed at the inlet of the West pond. Please
monitor this to insure the problem does not become excessive. Perhaps placing some riprap with a D50 of 6"
may be appropriate.
Constnlction of the north and south lined drainage channels is now complete but as noted in the Division's
monthly reports and Don May's reports, the toe of the waste pile needs to be replaced and compacted to 9090
proctor. However, if the space is needed for traffic, a designed retaining wall could be constructed. Please
insure [ha[ the recommendations of the engineer or the Division are implemented by the end of the 3rd quarter
2001.
If you have any questions or are in need of any additional information, please write or call me at (303) 866-
3567.
Sincerely,
rry B.
