This tract <br />is next to [heir 1/I mine. Tt:u 'coal is federally-owned while-the land sur- <br />• face is privately owned by F.nergv Fuels Corporation, Rout t- County Fucl Co., <br />Papoulas Land Co., and BLPf. Part of tl~e tract had been previously surveyed <br />by LOPA and reported in Arclia..o_loFical P.econnaissance of Proposed Ceal i.e.i::e <br />Areas in Ploffat', Rio Blanco, avid Routt Counties, Colorado, pp. 24-25. Part <br />of il~e tract was surveyed by Si:c Steel, BL`I P:ontrose Ilistrict Office, John <br />Beardsley, BISt Canon City District. Office, Tom }fanabe, BL21 KremmlinC RA; <br />and myself.3 Fevr USCS drill locations had also been previously surveyed <br />in tlic southern part of the tract. <br />`-.- ... The at:•.~ ~: ;~'. ,i~;,/, surveyed. Only the terraces above the drainages were <br />. - -_. Snrvn....,. .~ rest was not due to steepness of slope and heavy vegetative <br />ground cover. (See map). <br />• One site has been recorded by LOPA and 2 isolated finds were located by <br />my crew. Site S RT 24 is a thin flake scatter disturbed by a jeep trail <br />and sheepherders sheep pens. It has been given a significance level of <br />S3 - not likely Co be eligible to the National Register. IF 42 is a white <br />chert point found on a knoll. above a drainage confluence app. 600 feet sw <br />of S RT 24. IF 43 is a bifacially worked white chcrt fragment found in a <br />. jeep trail above reservoirs. <br />-• Tue two isolated finds were collected. A historic site was located but <br />• it will be evaluated by Rick Athearn. <br />No prehistoric sites eligible or likely to be eligible to the National <br />Register will be effected by this undertaking. <br />• ~• ~ It is recommended that this tract be put up for a competitive lease sale. <br />If during initial ground cover and topsoil removal, any artifacts, carbon- <br />ized areas, or bones are uncovered, it is suggested that Office of the State <br />Archaeologist or the BLM be notified. <br />~- .. ..
