as a result of plantings around houses and establishment
along irrigation ditches they are more widely distributed.
The gallery forest is an interesting vegetation type in
which species characteristic of deciduous forests of the
East are able to grow because of the moderating effects
of the cottonwood trees. Additionally, because of the
stratification of the forest (tree, shrub and herb layers) ,
there is a greater variety of habitats for wildlife species.
Human activities along South Boulder Creek for the last 150
years have substantially changed the original vegetation.
The existing vegetation on the site has developed in response
to agricultural practices and gravel mining operations
• (Figure F-1) . Past disturbances are reflected in the species
list (Figure F-2) where 53 of the 130 species on the list
are introduced. In addition to this large component of
introductions , a substantial number of native prairie species
occur on the site.
Pastures . Pastures occupy most of the floodplain along South
Boulder Creek . Limited farming has been attempted in the
past, but the primary agricultural use is grazing cattle.
Some areas are grazed all year around, and the vegetation
on these sites shows the effects of heavy utilization
(Figure F-3: A Stand of Pasture Vegetation) .
