VEGETATION
Summary
Existing vegetation on site has developed in response to
agricultural and gravel mining practices. It includes a
substantial number of introduced weedy species as well as
native prairie and sedge meadow types. The major impact
on vegetation resulting from gravel mining will be its
destruction as mining proceeds. The impact from dust on
surrounding vegetation will be minimal.
The impacts from surface disturbance can be mitigated by
reclamation of the land surface and revegetation with native
• species .
Description of Plant Communities
Five natural vegetation types occur as remnants at the Deepe
Farm site. Descriptions of these plant communities are
based on field observations and on a limited sampling program
conducted by Warren R. Keammerer, Ph.D. , of Stoecker-
Keammerer & Associates . Frequency values for the herbaceous
species were determined using 10 quadrats , one square meter
in area, located in each of the types . Sampling was conducted
• in early October, so early-flowering species are poorly
represented in the sample. The five types of natural vegetation
are tall grass prairie, short grass prairie, sedge meadow,
(• F-1
