~•
in cote hole C179 and is tho stratigraphic equivalent of a 32 foot thick bed of whin naheolite that ~ y
contains about 82%, by weight, nahcoliu in core hale C 177 about a mile to the east.
Ia light of the face that (1) the Yankce Gulch sodium lease area is underlain by w in-
place shale-oil rpottrce of more than 6.12b bil&on barnls of oil; and (2) that collapse and
passible surface subsidence occurred following solution of saline beds in the geologic pest, I
recommend:
A. A monitoring program be undertaken ro determine what effect the circulation of hat
water with a tempertmrre of 300° u 400°F over a period of time, posably exceeding a
year, might have on the 600 to 630 foot thick sequence of iaurbedded nehcoliu ~d
oil shale.
H. After the completion of one or more solution mined cavities that the wre holes
drilled to monitor possible subsidence be dulled midway between the aenur of the
cavity and the outer edge of the caviry. 1'he core that is obtained should be
physically examined and analyzed to determine whether there is any depletion of
organic content and dawsonite content of the oil shale, evidence of nay catagenisis of
the kerogea including a lessening of the compressive strength of the oil shale which
might affect the structural integrity of the mined rack sequence; and
C. lastly, whether there has in fad bees any collnpae m a result of the solution mining.
Yours truly,
John R Darnell
