• Trapper Mine submitted an application to the Colorado Radiation and Hazardous Wastes Control Division on
January 28, 1981, for approval to dispose of utility wastes at the Trapper Mine. Approval was granted on
June 23, 1981 (refer to Section 1.2.2.1).
4.3.4.5 Disposal Sites and Methods
Three types of disposal sites were identified and evaluated by Radian (1981). They include the spoils
troughs, spoils benches and pR bottoms (refer to Figure 4.3-2). A fourth type of site that will be used but was
not considered by Radian is spoils depressions. This type of disposal site is identical to the pit bottom type of
sde except that such sites will not be concurrent with the mining operation.
WAh disposal in the spoils troughs, wastes will be placed between two spoils peaks or ridges. Later the area
will be regraded such that the utility wastes will be covered by a layer of spoils material at least five feet thick.
The spoils bench type of disposal sRe is very similar to the spoils trough type of site. Utility wastes are placed
on the spoils bench created far spoil side stripping by the dragline after the dragline has completed use of the
bench. After regrading, the location of the utility wastes is approiximately the same as with spoils trough
disposal.
• The pd bottom type of disposal site will be used for placing utility wastes in the bottom of a Pit after coal
removal and prior to the backfiiling of the pN. The utility wastes will be covered with at least a five foot thick
layer of spoil material.
The spoils depression type of disposal will be the same as the pit bottom type of disposal except that the site
will be created with the dragiine, dozers or
• ... .. . .
P~-N ..- -- -...
_•,-:
a-ao
