iii iiiiiiiiiiiu iii <br />sss <br />4.0 HYUNOLOGICLAETWORKS--Continued <br />4.2 Ground-Water Networks <br />The Data Base Includes 377 Sites <br />Doc Date:1y11/2001 <br />Observation-well networks monitored by the U. S. Geological Survey and private <br />companies and inventories of wells, springs, and mines by the U. S. Geological <br />Survey provide data for describing ground-water conditions in the area. <br />The U.S. Geological Survey annually measures <br />and records water levels in 13 observation wells in <br />Huerfano and Las Animas Counties, Colo. Samples <br />of water for chemical analyses have been collected <br />from 10 of these wells. Seven additional wells, five <br />of which were sampled, were formerly monitored for <br />varying periods. In addition, many wells, springs, <br />and mines were inventoried and sampled in Colorado <br />(mostly north of the Purgatoire River) and in New <br />Mexico (mostly east and south of the Park Plateau). <br />Some of this information is published in Griggs <br />(1948, p. 84-176), Powell (1952, p. 29-30), McLaugh- <br />lin and others (1961), Dinwiddie (1964, p. 6-IS), and <br />Hart and Smith (1979), but much of it is unpublished <br />U.S. Geological Survey data. <br />CF&1 Steel Corp. monitors water levels in nine <br />observation wells at its Allen and Maxwell Mines <br />near Weston, Colo. (Water, Waste, and Land, Lld., <br />1980, and unpublished data). Samples of water for <br />chemical analyses were collected from six of these <br />wells. CF&I also monitors tlic volume and quality of <br />mine discharge at the two sites. <br />Kaiser Steel Corp. monitors water levels and <br />quality in 16 observation wells, as well as the volume <br />and quality of mine discharge, al its York Canyon <br />Mine, west of Raton, N. Mex. (Dames and Moore, <br />1978, and unpublished data). <br />A data base of 377 sites was selected for This <br />report on the basis of the spatial distribution of the <br />sires and the quamity and quality of data available al <br />each site. The data base includes wells and springs <br />discharging from single bedrock and alluvial aqui- <br />fers, multiple bedrock aquifers, and discharge from <br />mines and tailings. Two hundred and (five of these <br />sites have water-quality analyses available. The data <br />base is shown in (figure 4.2-I. Representative <br />ground-water data are included in the "Supplemental <br />Data" section and data-site numbers in this report <br />correspond to this tabulation. <br />Figure 4.2-2 A well in burro Canyon near Segundo, Colorado. <br />
