'
Division of Minerals any .._wogy
Recently Kea Coal Company (Kerr) provided a letter updating the findings of the borehole
reconnaissance and other information pertainurg to activities consistent with the Borehole
Reclamation Plan Qanuary 2000). Table 1 and Drawing BLM-1, Federal Coal Lease Exploration
Boreholes, were submitted subsequent to the letter. On behalf of Kea, Montgomery Wazson has
completed additional research into the potential "ownership" of the boreholes with unlmown history
or purpose. This letter and attachmenu provide the updated information for your information and
review. The attachmenzs include revised Table 1 and Drawing BLM-1. The copies sent to you
previouslyshould be considered superseded bythese attachmenzs.
Montgomery Watson contatted several divisions of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and
the Colorado Division of Water Resources (DWR) in an effort to identify databases or other file
information on borehole drilling in the area of the Kea permit. The DWR provided a listing of
drilling permizs, which provided no new information. Throe pemrizs were issued to Kea for drilling
in Section 35, Township 9 North, Range 78 West (720 pit area). These correlate somewhat with the
AP-3 and AP-2 monitoring wells. The Water Resources Division of USGS, in Grand Junction
provided a listing of water wells in the Kea Mme area. Four wells were located within the Kea
permit and correlate somewhat with known wells with unlmown origin or ownership. Table 1 and
Drawing BLM-1 have been revised to reflect this infomration.
Acconiing to the Energy Resources Team of L1SG5, drilling for geologic information was apparently
performed bythe former Conservation Division (now BLM) in the McCallum Anticline area neaz the
Kerr mine. The information u available in Open File Report 77-888. Borehole location information
taken from the report was compared to Drawing BLM-1. Five boreholes were drilled (by the
Conservation Division) within the Kea permit, but only one correlates with any lmown wells with
unlmown ownership.
To snmrry`ri~e the well ownezship, of the 37 bedrock wells, 25 are likely owned by Kea, 8 by the
L15GS, and ownership of 4 wells rerrrains unknown. There are approximately 33 alluvial wells,
including 3 wells in the 720 Pit; 18 are likely owned by Kea and the rernai~ 15 by the USGS.
Po. env nanl3 ,ei 3%o a75 e~so
IAS Pine Grove Road pan 570 ii990~8 Serving the World's En viionm entar ~!'e etls
Sreamboal Spnngs.
