0132 CANYON CULTURAL RESOURCE/ENVIRONMF.NTAL RECONNAISSANCE
Physical Location
From Pueblo, Colorado travel West on Colorado Highway 96
approximately 12 miles to Siloam Rd. Travel South on Siloam Road
approximately 6 miles to Red Creek Road. MBC's field survey area lies
mostly in the northern'/: of Section 36 and a selected area of Section 31
(see attachment 1); Owl Canyon Quadrangle (See Exhibits 2, 3a, 3b, 3c of
the special use permit No. 98-O1, Siloam Stone, Inc. Ferd Mueller,
Applicant for a detailed description of the effected area).
Methodology
Literature Research
A file search in Colorado's Office of the State Archeologist revealed
that Section 36 contained no formally recorded Cultural Resources in the
proposed mining area. However, Section 31 - immediately east of Section
36 -had 5 archeological sites recorded by Dr. William Buckles of the
University of Southern Colorado at Pueblo in 1973. These site reports,
literature research at DU & the Western History Section of the Denver
Public Library, and information from several other un-recorded cultural
resources in the area were the keys to our preliminary interpretation of the
numerous un-recorded archeological/historical sites in the proposed
mining area.
Field Methods
A preliminary archeological and environmental field reconnaissance
was conducted of the proposed mining area and selected parts of the
surrounding canyon land by myself and Dr. Charles Cambridge on
February I, 1998. A Trimble® Scout GPS device was used to record
positional data. A Canon® AE-1 Program -and at vazious times - a
polarizer and flash attachment was used to photograph artifacts, cultural
features, and rock art during field work. This field reconnaissance only
covered - S% of the effected acreage in the proposed mining area. Field
notes and photographic negatives are on file at Medicine Bow
Consultants, Inc. (303) 665-2643.
