Public Comment and Protest
* Attached please Snd a petition from area residents circulated in protest to awarding the Special Use Permit
requested of Pueblo County by Siloam Stone. Although this petition has been circulating a short time (less than
10 days) we have ah-eady obtained over 600 signatures of persons who object to mining the area known as Peck's
Canyon, and to the granting of the Special Use Permit mentioned above. Public outcry in opposition to mining
this area has been great, with many many calls and letters from concerned citizens.
* Attached also please &nd a letter of protest from the Beulah Regional Couservation Society, and copies of
letters submitted to the Colorado State Board of Minerals and Geology from area landowners protesting the
permit at the state level.
* We have spoken with literally hundreds ofpeople about this mining issue, explaining the fact that the mineral
rights were retained by the State of Colorado and currently leased to Siloam Stone, so they have the right to
mine this property. People were astonished and some outraged that there was no way to stop this, and agreed
that what is somebody's right is not always what is right. People want to see this special and precious area of
Pueblo County preserved and not mined.
