COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF PUB: HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT, Water Qv / Cantro! Division
Rationale -Page 6, Permit No. CO-0042161
B. Compliance Wuh Terms and Conditions of Previous Permit
• 1. Ellluenr Limitntions: The data shown in the preceding tables indicate apparent violations of the permits. In 1993,
the permittee began dewatering a portion of the old section of the mine. 7hry expected a higher flow rate, but did
not expect iron levels to exceed the permit limitation. When exceedences were noted, the permittee conducted
inneased testing at various paints within the system and thry worked with Nalco to determine an effectiue
flacculant. The initial flocculant was not completely effectis+e, so two additions! rhemicals were authorized by the
Division and added to treatment. This lowered the iron kvrl to within the permit limitation. During the initial
period when iron levels were highest, the facility also failed acrue WET tests. In compliance with the permit they
performed accelerated testing which passed the criteria, thus allowing than to resume the normal testing frequency.
The Division issued notice of violation letters jot the iron exceedencrs and corresponded with the perntitru on theft
and the WET failures umil the facility returned to compliance.
2. Other Permit Reauiremenrs: The permittee has been in compliance with other terms and conditions of the permit.
V/. TERMS AND COND/TIONS OF PERM/T
A.
