Study Objectives /Research Dcsi~n
The purposes of the inventories were to conduct a files starch for the areas potential
subject to subsidence by the deep mining activities; to conduct an intcnsivc archaeological
survey of the area potcntial{y subject to direct impact liom drill pad construction; to identify
and accurately locate archaeological sites and/or districts and isolated finds; to evaluate these
surface Inds for inclusion on the National Register of Flistoric Places (NR11P); to determine
the potential effect of the mining activities on all NRI-IP-eligible resources; and to make
recommendations for the mitigation of the adverse effects on those cultural resources. The
presence of such resources was considered unlikely within the intense inventory area
because of its location on a flood plain and because of the high Icvel of disturbance by
historic GuroAmcrican mining and occupation on the narrow valley Iloor.
f icld Mctltods
A 100 percent, intcnsivc, pedestrian Class III cultural resource survey was conducted
for flit drill hole location. This area were inspected by a single person vvlto walked E-W
transccts within the rectangular, 10-acre, intensive survey area. The heavy vegetation on the
river bottom was a limitation to the survey.
• Cultural resources were sought as surlacc exposures and were characterized as sites
or isolated finds. Sites were dclined by the presence of six or more artifacts and/or
signifcant feature(s) indicative of patterned human activity. Isolated finds were defined by
the presence of a single artilact or several artilac[s, which apparently represent a single event
(c.g., a single core reduction), and arc surfici:tl in nature. Cultural resources encountered
were to be recorded to standards set by the Ollice of Archaeology and l-Iistory Preservation
(OAI IP) of the Slate Flistorical Society.
Study findings
No cultural resources were encountered by the intensive inventory and archaeological
clearance is recommended. No cultural resources were on lile within the Class I invenrory
area. Appendix A provides a summary of the tiles search through the OAHP. Due to the
steep terrain it is unlikely that significant resources occur within most of this area. The
heavily wooded nature of the hillsides would make a ground survey very difficult. In
addition, the subsidence may not have any measurable surface effects.
• 18
