Box 176, Oak Creek, CO 80417
(970)736-8111
~~/;~-I\/k~D
JU1~ 1 1 1996
Colorado Department of Health
WQCD-PE-B2
4300 Cherry Creek Drive South
Denver, CO 80222-1530
Dear Sir/Madam:
Division of Minerals 8 GeoiuJ{ne 7, 1996
Enclosed are the Edna Mine's (Permit #CO-0032638) Second Quaver, 1996 Wholc Effluent
Toxicity test results.
During this quarters test cycle all four sites requiring monitoring for Chronic parameters were
discharging. These sites are designated as 002, 003, 004 and 006. Sampling for these tests a•as
done on 5/ 13/96, 5/ 15196 and 5/ 17/96. Laboratory work on the samples began on 5/ 14/96.
This test cycle was completed prior to the effective date of further limitations, as noted in the
permit, of 111/97, thus to fail a site must fail criteria on both the significant statistical difference and
the 1C25 criteria. Site 006 showed a failure in the c. dubia species for lethality based on the IC25
but was above the IWC of 59%o in significant statistical difference, thus site 006 was in compliance
for this test. Site 004, however showed a failure in both the significant statistical difference and
the IC25 with the c. dubia species in lethality. Thus site 004, has failed the second quarter lest
cycle. This failure was reported to Kathleen Sullivan, CDH, on 5/30/96, via phone conversation.
This is the same dale that the (nine was notified of the failure by the lab. Accelerated testing on this
site was started on 6/3/96 and is ongoing.
One other item is worth noting at this time. The mine is in receipt of an amended permit which will
change WET testing on the mine site to Acute criteria. The effective dale of the permit amendment
is 6/1/96. Since the second quarter testing was done prior to the effective date of the amendments
chronic testing was done. Likewise, since site 004 showed a failure under the old chronic testing
criteria the single species accelerated testing is being completed using the chromic test criteria.
Starling with the third quarter WET lest cycle testing will be done on sites 004 and new site 007
(combination Ilow of 002, 003 and 006) and lltese tests will be done on an acute basis. The site is
in need of new DMR forms for this testing.
Test results for the accelerated testing on site 004 will be forwarded to the CDH when they beoome
available to the mine.
Should you have any questions regarding these reports, please contact me at the Edna Mine site
inc
David Beverlin
Resident Engineer
xc: U.S.E.P.A.
CDMG
