n
u
1.0 INTRODUCTION
SOIL ASSESSMENT
A two phase soil study was conducted on the Storm King
Mine permit area during the early summer of 1981. The first
phase involved mapping, sampling, and preparing soil
descriptions at a detailed level (Order 2) for selected
undisturbed portions of the permit area (pad area). The
purpose of this part of the soil assessment is to provide
soils baseline information for potential sources of soil
materials and disturbance areas. In the second phase of the
soil assessment, existing disturbed areas were sampled and
• evaluated to determine their suitability for revegetation.
Disturbed areas studied included existing roads, drill pads,
and a portion of the pad area (mixed material pile). The
baseline information provides the necessary data for
generation of a sound program of topsoil removal,
replacement, enhancement, and revegetation for the area
studied.
1.1 OBJECTIVES
Pre-mining assessments of "topsoil" materials are a
necessary prerequisite to analyzing the impact of soil surface
disturbances. These assessments provide a basis for designing
• the methods for proper removal, handling, and restoring
inherent soil properties relevant to sustained plant growth
