each undisturbed mapping unit. Similar information for
suitable topsoil material in disturbed areas is contained
in Table 3. These data provide a guide for evaluating soils
prior to, during and subsequent to mining. The acreage, depth,
and volume of suitable topsoil for the soil mapping units
are also shown in Table 4• These data have been coupled with
mapping unit descriptions to provide the basic information
necessary for stripping, stockpiling, replacing suitable
topsoil materials and revegetating existing disturbed areas.
The depths listed in the tables for suitable topsoil
materials are averages for the soil series phase, soils series
variant, or soil series complex.
• They were derived from Pield inspection and may not
match exactly the depths provided in the .soil profile
description or laboratory data (Appendix C) profile fo.r
the typifying pedon. Appendix A and B provide details of
map unit and series descriptions.
1.6 DISCUSSION
1.6.1 Pad Area (Undisturbed)

The soils mapped on the Storm King Mine permit area
have been categorized into four main classes:

- 15 -
