• TAB 20
BACKFILLING AND GRADING
Backfilling~ n3 d Grading Met_nodc_, Mining and backfilling operations at Nucla Mine will be
performed concurrently. Scrapers will remove the overburden and parting materials, then haul
the material to a previously mined area to be backfilled. Initially in Areas No. 1 and 2, some
overburden material will be temporarily stockpiled outside of the mined pits onto previously
mined lands but will later be hauled back to or graded into mined area to achieve the final land
form. The existing rough graded spoil in the western part of Area No. 1 will also be hauled or
pushed into a mined area and graded to the approximate topographic form shown on Exhibit 20-
3.
Upon completion of the backfilling, all highwalls and depressions larger than one cubic yard will
be eliminated. All areas disturbed by mining will be graded to the approximate landfomt shown
on Exhibits 20-3 and 20-10.
Final Graded Slop. Postmining slopes will not be uniform but will approximate the general
nature of the premining topography. All highwalls will be eliminated and graded to a 5:1 slope or
• flatter.
T "rrarec. Terracing in the final reclamation is not proposed at the Nucla Mine.
mall D nressions. Small depressions are not proposed at the Nucla Mine. See Exhibits 20-3
and 20-10 for the postmining topography.
to loo -c. Nucla Mine does not have steep sbpes as defined in the regulations.
Final Grading. Final grading and preparation of the backfilled material before placement of
topsoil material will be done along the contour to minimize subsequent erosion and instability. If
such grading is hazardous to equipment operators, then grading will be done in a direction other
than generally parallel to the contour.
Final Pit Rackfilline. In order to eliminate any final highwalls and to achieve the approximate
original landfonrt, some highwall material will be pushed or dozed into the mined area. Exhibits
20-4 and 20-11 show typical cross sections of the fill material placed into the mined pits.
Material above the final highwall may be blasted or ripped and then graded to blend into the
surrounding topography.
•
20-1
