Seepage control meaavres submitted for Tailings Pond No. 9 were <br />dcveloned to eliminate lateral seepage visibly exiting the embank- <br />ment toe only, acid not to eliminate or contain vertical seecage <br />occurring through the pond and alluvium below. The stability of <br />the tailings imno~ur~dment is based on seepage through the pond <br />and underiyinc substrate to ~~,aintain minimum phreatic levels in <br />the Dond emban'+~'nent. <br />9. Infiltration o_` waters from the Animas River into the tailings <br />cr:~a-.~laie nt toe was deternin ed by visual inspection during high <br />runoff. No water cuality analyses were performed to determine <br />the flow origin because contamination problems exist at the toe <br />due to windblown and eroded tailings material from the emban~~nent. <br />5. Seepage control Dlans submitted for Tailings Pond No. 4 to date <br />do not propose installation of a positive outfall or discharge <br />point, and amendment to the discharge permit issued for the mill <br />facility is not anticipated. <br />I believe the proceeding information addresses your recuest.
