Anticline, a major oil-producing area located several miles east of the permit
• area. Other major folds in the area are the Wolf Creek Dome, the Chimney Creek
Dome, the Williams Park Anticline, and Twentymile Park. The areal structure has
also been modified by numerous faults, which are shown on Map 4.
Several Upper Cretaceous geologic formations crop out in the area. They
are, in ascending order, the Mancos shale, the Iles formation, the Williams Fork
formation, and the Lewis shale.
The Iles and Williams Fork formations comprise the Mesaverde group and con-
tain the lower Mesaverde coals and the middle and upper Mesaverde coals, respec-
tively. The coal from the mined out area was located within the Iles formation.
In addition, none of the described formations are listed as potential aquifers
within the permit area.
• Quaternary alluvial deposits in the Yampa River and small tributaries are
the main sources of water in the area. Additional water resources are available
where ephemeral streams have been dammed to provide water for livestock.
The locations and information concerning appropriated and adjudicated water
rights in the Meadows No. I mine area were obtained from the Colorado State
Engineer office, Division of Water Resources. Table 2.04.5-I shows a compila-
tion of the information. Locations were field verified in the immediate vicin-
ity of the Meadows No. 1 mine.
In the mine disturbed area, no subsurface water was encountered in any of
the more than 40 drill holes within the permit area (Map 4A). However, as is
implied elsewhere in the application, subsurface water was encountered in
drilling other properties controlled by Sun Coal in the vicinity of the
~ J
- 60 - (Rev. 5/86)
