Colorado Springs, CO. 80919 .303/599-8225
RECE(VE®
November 1, 1977
NOV - 31977
MINED LAND RECLAMATION
Colo. Dept. of Natural Resources
Mr. Rade Orell
Chief Colorado Springs Division
Colorado Mine Land Reclamation Board
723 Centennial Building
131 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203
Dear h1r. Orell:
The application by Castle Concrete Company to continue mining Pike
View, Queens Canyon and Black Canyon is one that should be reviewed
very carefully. Obviously from a purely aesthetic standpoint, the
request should be rejected and the damage already done should be
required to be corrected.
I realize there are more than aesthetic considerations, however.
The somewhat cheaper concrete and other stone materials is an
important part of the continued orderly growth of Colorado Springs.
It seems to me however that the loss in tourist revenue dollars
and the distaste left by the scars not only for the tourists but
for the residents need to be weighed against the minimal economic
advantage. The scars created by the mining operations will take
centuries to redevelop, if it ever happens. There are numerous
other sources that do not spoil the area and do not materially add
to the actual cost. People come to Colorado Springs because of the
beauty and to get away from the industrial scars of their former
communities. Pollution created by the smoke stacks of Gary Steel
Mills is no less a form of pollution than the scares created on the
mountains by these mining operations.
Please eliminate the continued dispoilation of the front range by
rejecting Castle Concretes request.
Yours very truly, /
~ ~' ~-,~
~~
L~~~ l ~
Norbert W.
