4.3.6 STABILIZATION OF RILLS AND GULLIES
III IIIIIIIIIIIII III
In order to control and refinish rills that exceed the standards and to
avoid the establishment of gullies, the Edna Mine will utilize any or all of
the following methods and steps:
1. In areas where rilling is severe, topsoil will be distributed over
the damaged area and graded smooth.
2. Retopsoiled areas will be seeded at appropriate rates and contour
furrowed when feasible.
3. Double contour furrows may be established every fifth standard
contour furrow where slopes are moderate to steep.
4. When necessary, previously seeded areas will be contour furrowed
again to reestablished silted furrows and to enhance water retention
capabilities. In particular, steeper slopes will be evaluated for
this management technique since their potential for rilling and
gullying is greater. The necessity of this operation will be
weighed against vegetation stand establishment and development since
furrowing will destroy a percentage of the stand.
5. If possible, biological methods will be employed to control erosion.
Aspen and other face growing tree and shrub species may be planted
in areas with high erosion potential to determine if a stand of
woody vegetation can be established that will control the long term
threat of erosion. Such plantings will be undertaken after any
other necessary operations have been completed (i.e. - topsoilinq,
contour furrowing, seeding, etc.).
6. On slopes where gullying is beginning to show, check dams will be
constructed. Check dams will vary in construction depending upon
severity and extent of gullying. Materials used will range from
silt fences, small strawbale dams, anchored wire, and rock check
dams.
7. The gully head will be stabilized utilizing one of the above
techniques or plans.

4.3-11
November 1, 1989
